One of India’s finest Test batters, Cheteshwar Pujara, has retired from all forms of cricket. His decision marks the end of a career that lasted more than 15 years. Pujara, known for his calm style and strong defence, became a symbol of Indian Test cricket.
Pujara made his India debut in 2010. He went on to play 103 Test matches. He scored 7,195 runs with an average of 43.60. His record includes 19 centuries and 35 half-centuries. He is remembered most for his match-winning knocks overseas, especially in Australia. His best moment came in the 2018–19 Test series. He scored heavily and was named Player of the Series as India won their first Test series in Australia.
Pujara also carried forward the role once played by Rahul Dravid at number three in the batting line-up. He often faced the toughest bowlers and gave strength to the team with his patience.
Prime Minister Modi Lauds Cheteshwar Pujara
After the retirement news, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a heartfelt letter to Pujara. Pujara shared this letter on social media. The Prime Minister praised him for being a true Test cricketer in an age dominated by shorter formats. Modi said Pujara reminded fans of the beauty of Test cricket.
The letter spoke about Pujara’s determination and his ability to bat for long hours. Modi remembered his fighting knocks in Australia which helped India achieve back-to-back Test series wins. He also said that Pujara’s calm presence gave hope to fans and teammates alike.

The Prime Minister highlighted Pujara’s commitment to domestic cricket. Even as an international player, Pujara never stopped playing for Saurashtra. Modi added that Rajkot will always be proud of his role in putting the region on the cricket map.
The letter also mentioned Pujara’s family. Modi said his father, who was also his mentor, must be very proud. He added that Pujara’s wife Puja and daughter Aditi can now spend more time with him.
Pujara has also started sharing his views as a commentator. Modi expressed confidence that Pujara will continue to inspire young cricketers.
Pujara’s retirement leaves a big space in Indian cricket. But his legacy will stay forever.
