Chennai Super Kings have been dealt a big setback just days before the start of IPL 2026. Australian fast bowler Nathan Ellis has been ruled out of the tournament due to a hamstring injury. The season is set to begin on March 28, leaving CSK with very little time to find a proper replacement.
Ellis was expected to play a key role for the team this year. He was seen as the ideal bowler to handle death overs after Matheesha Pathirana moved to Kolkata Knight Riders. His absence creates a big gap in the bowling attack. CSK had hoped he would step up and deliver in crucial moments.
CSK Face Bowling Crisis Ahead of Season Opener
“It is a big blow for us. Ellis is a crucial bowler, especially in the death overs. We are looking at replacements,” CSK CEO K.S. Viswanthan was quoted as saying by Sportstar.
The 31-year-old was part of the CSK squad last season but played only one match. Overall, he has taken 19 wickets in his IPL career. Despite limited appearances, his skills made him an important option for the team.
The bowling unit now looks less experienced. Players like Matt Henry, Zak Foulkes, and Jamie Overton are available. However, they are not known for strong death bowling.
CSK also missed the chance to sign Blessing Muzarabani, who joined KKR as a replacement player. This further limits their options.
Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK will begin their campaign against Rajasthan Royals on March 30 in Guwahati. The team will now need to quickly adjust and find solutions before the tournament begins.
