Big Blow! Josh Hazlewood Ruled Out of Australia Squad for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026

Australia have suffered a major blow ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026. Senior fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been officially ruled out of the tournament. Cricket Australia confirmed the news just one day before the start of the competition.

Hazlewood is still recovering from injury. The team management had hoped he would be fit for the later stages. However, the recovery has taken longer than expected. As a result, Australia will begin the tournament without one of their most experienced bowlers.

Australia Wait on Replacement, Zampa and David Fit

Australia chief selector Tony Dodemaide explained the decision. He said the medical advice forced the team to be cautious.

“We were hopeful Josh would be back to match fitness by the Super Eights stage, but the latest indications (are) he is still some time away. Trying to accelerate his programme will carry too much of a risk. We will not be naming a replacement player immediately. We feel we are well covered for the initial games so will make any later decisions based on priority need at the time,” Dodemaide said, as quoted by cricket.com.au.

Australia will not rush to name a replacement. The selectors believe the current squad is strong enough for the early matches. A decision will be taken later if required.

There was some positive news for the defending champions. Power-hitter Tim David has been declared fit. Fast bowler Nathan Ellis has also recovered in time. Veteran spinner Adam Zampa will be available for the opening match as well. Australia face Ireland in their first Group B game on February 11.

Mitchell Marsh will lead the side. The squad also includes Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Cameron Green, and Adam Zampa. Sean Abbott has been named as the travelling reserve.

Australia will play four group-stage matches. Two games will be held in Colombo. The remaining fixtures will take place in Kandy.

Despite Hazlewood’s absence, Australia will still enter the tournament as strong contenders. The team will hope their depth and experience help them make another deep run at the global event.
