The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has given a clear update about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. There were many reports saying the two stars might stop playing ODIs too. But now, BCCI has confirmed that both players are still available for one-day matches.
BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla spoke to ANI on July 15. He said, “I want to make it very clear… it’s good for us that they are available for one-day cricket.” This ends the talk about their ODI future, especially with the next ODI World Cup in 2027.
Test and T20I Retirements Were Their Own Decision
Rohit and Kohli both retired from T20Is after India’s win in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Later, they also announced their retirement from Test cricket in May 2025, just before the England series. Shukla said their Test retirement was their personal decision.

“BCCI never forces players to retire. It is always their choice,” he said.
Both players had a disappointing Test tour in Australia in 2024-25. Rohit Sharma scored only 31 runs in five innings, with an average of 6.20. Virat Kohli did a bit better, scoring 190 runs in nine innings at an average of 23.75. His highest score was an unbeaten 100 in the first Test in Perth.
Rohit and Kohli Still Committed to ODI Cricket
Both Rohit and Kohli have excellent ODI records. Kohli has scored 14,181 runs in 302 matches, averaging 57.88 with 51 centuries. Rohit has 11,168 runs in 273 matches, with an average of 48.76 and 32 hundreds. Now, with Test and T20I formats behind them, fans will see them play only in ODIs.
Their experience will be important for India as they prepare for future one-day challenges.
