BCB Bans Former Cricketer Monjurul Islam After Misconduct Allegations by Women’s captain Jahanara Alam

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has banned former national cricketer Monjurul Islam from all cricket activities under its control. The decision came after serious misconduct allegations were raised by former Bangladesh women’s captain Jahanara Alam. The board announced the action after reviewing an official inquiry report.

The incident goes back to the 2022 Women’s ODI World Cup. During that tournament, Monjurul was working as a selector and team manager for the Bangladesh women’s side. Jahanara Alam filed a complaint accusing him of sexual assault and inappropriate behaviour. Following the complaint, the BCB formed an Independent Inquiry Committee to examine the case.

The committee was led by Justice Tariq Ul Hakim and included legal experts and board officials. After months of investigation, the panel studied four separate allegations. Two of the charges could not be proven because of insufficient evidence. However, the committee found prima facie evidence in the other two allegations. It stated that Monjurul’s behaviour did not match professional standards and fell under misconduct and harassment as defined by Supreme Court guidelines. His contract with the BCB had already ended on June 30, 2025, but the board still chose to take disciplinary action.

Board statement and next steps

After a meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, the BCB confirmed the ban through an official statement:

“Based on the findings of the Independent Inquiry Committee formed by the BCB to examine the complaint lodged by former Bangladesh Women’s National Team Captain Jahanara Alam, the Board has decided to impose a ban on former national cricketer Monjurul Islam from all forms of direct or indirect employment and/or cricket-related activities under the jurisdiction of the Bangladesh Cricket Board. The BCB is reviewing the recommendations of the Committee and will take any additional measures deemed necessary in light of the report,” BCB said in a statement.

The decision has sparked discussion about accountability in Bangladesh cricket, especially in the women’s game. Meanwhile, the BCB also confirmed the inaugural Women’s Bangladesh Premier League from April 4 to 14, 2026, in Dhaka and Chattogram. The board has also extended selection panel chairman Gazi Ashraf Hossain’s tenure by one month while it searches for a replacement.
