Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2026 To be Postponed to May Due to General Elections

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) might be held in May instead of its usual December-January window. BPL Chairman Mahbub Anam shared this news after an emergency meeting in Dhaka on Thursday, July 10. The meeting took place at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

This change may happen because of the upcoming general elections in Bangladesh. The elections are expected in early 2026. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has asked all departments to prepare for the polls by December. So, the BPL schedule might be changed to avoid any conflict.

Mahbub said they are waiting for a final decision from the government. Only then will the new BPL dates be confirmed. “BPL may happen before December, or we may shift it to May. We are planning accordingly,” he said.

BCB Invites New sports marketing company to handle BPL operations

The BPL board is also working on improving how the tournament is managed. They plan to hire a sports marketing company to handle operations. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has already invited interested firms to apply.

Mahbub said the chosen agency must have experience in international T20 leagues. In the past, BPL was handled by companies without much experience. This caused problems for the BCB. “We will give importance to experienced firms this time,” he said.

He also said the BPL must improve its image. “Mistakes happened before. The BCB must take responsibility. Now we want to raise the standard and brand value of the BPL,” Mahbub added.

The next BPL edition will start a new five-year cycle. Several companies have shown interest in joining. But the BCB will decide after making a new financial plan. “We will talk to corporate houses ourselves,” Mahbub said.

He also said the number of BPL venues could increase. Currently, matches happen in Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet. New venues like Bogura, Khulna, Barisal, and Rajshahi are being checked. Only those meeting ICC rules and offering good accommodation will be added.
