Ajit Agarkar’s future as chairman of the BCCI selection committee remains uncertain. The selection meeting for India’s upcoming white-ball series against West Indies is scheduled for Wednesday, September 16.
According to reports, there has been no communication between Agarkar and the BCCI’s top officials about a possible extension. His current contract is set to expire on October 4.
India will play three ODIs and five T20Is against West Indies. The limited-overs series will begin on September 27. The T20I squad is expected to have several players from India’s Asian Games group.
The selectors also have several decisions to make for the ODI squad. The meeting could therefore be important for both India’s squad and Agarkar’s future.
Reports suggest that Agarkar may not receive a one-year extension. He was earlier expected to continue in the role until the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, that situation has reportedly changed in recent weeks.
According to NDTV Sports, no senior BCCI official had contacted Agarkar about his future as of now. The report also claimed that Agarkar has told people close to him that he could send a ‘thank you note’ to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia after the West Indies selection meeting.
Several players in focus for ODI selection
The BCCI has not officially confirmed that Agarkar will be replaced. His future therefore remains unclear ahead of Wednesday’s meeting.
The ODI selection is also expected to attract attention. Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya could be discussed by the selectors.
Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rajat Patidar are also reportedly in contention for places in the squad. Their selection could depend on form, fitness and availability.
The selectors will also assess the fitness of several players before finalising the three-match ODI squad.
With Agarkar’s contract ending on October 4, the September 16 meeting could be an important moment for the chief selector. However, the BCCI is yet to make an official announcement about his future.
