Spain and Argentina will face each other in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday, July 19, at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford. Both teams are one win away from lifting football’s biggest trophy.
The final has created huge excitement among football fans around the world. Apart from the match itself, the build-up has focused on Lionel Messi, teenage star Lamine Yamal, the referee, and several off-field stories.
According to Opta’s pre-match simulations, Spain enter the final as favourites. The supercomputer gave Spain a 59.6 percent chance of winning the World Cup, while Argentina were given a 40.4 percent chance of successfully defending their title.
This will be only the second World Cup meeting between the two nations. Their previous clash came in the 1966 tournament, when Argentina defeated Spain 2-1.
Messi, Referee and Fans Grab Attention Before Final
Lionel Messi has remained the biggest talking point before the final. Many believe this could be the legendary forward’s last World Cup match. Fans are also following his battle for the Golden Boot and the growing excitement around Spain’s young star Lamine Yamal.
Ahead of the final, Messi shared an emotional message on Instagram. He wrote, “The most beautiful thing about all these years was never just the titles, but the entire journey. FIFA has appointed Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic to officiate the final. He becomes the first referee from Slovenia to take charge of a men’s World Cup final.
Speaking about his appointment, Vincic said, “First came the shock, then the happiness. I was shaking. Officiating a World Cup final is an incredible honour. It’s every referee’s dream when they first start, so I’m extremely proud of myself and my team.”
More than 80,000 fans are expected inside the stadium, while thousands more will gather across New York to watch one of the biggest matches in football history.
