Pakistan have been fined five per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate during their Group A match against India in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
The match was played at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Sunday. Pakistan suffered a defeat against their arch-rivals in their opening game of the tournament.
The sanction was imposed by match referee Trudy Anderson of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees. Pakistan were found to be one over short of the required target after time allowances were considered.
According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their team fails to bowl in the allotted time.
The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Claire Polosak and Jacquline Williams, third umpire Eloise Sheridan and fourth umpire Sue Redfern.
Pakistan captain Fatima Sana accepted the offence and pleaded guilty. As a result, there was no need for a formal hearing.
Fatima Sana disappointed after opening defeat
After the match, Fatima Sana expressed her disappointment with Pakistan’s performance, especially with the bat.
“The batting side was very disappointing. We need to step up as we have a long way to go. [171 target] We were good till the last few overs, but we got sloppy. The one extra fielder coming in also affected us. It might be because of lefty-right combination. It is a young side and they will learn,” she said at the post-match presentation.
She also highlighted Pakistan’s poor fielding effort and missed opportunities.
“[Catching] Catches win matches but unfortunately, and the senior players dropped catches. We need to improve in bowling and catching. We will try and execute our plans as soon as possible. [Intent in powerplay] Our powerplay, we won with bat and ball. But we collapsed with the bat and we need to improve there,” she concluded.
Pakistan will now look to bounce back in their upcoming matches in the tournament.
