India Women captain Harmanpreet Kaur grabbed headlines ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 with a witty response about her retirement plans.
The tournament will be held in England and Wales from June 12 to July 5. For the first time, 12 teams will compete in the event. They have been divided into two groups of six teams each. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals.
India have been placed in a tough Group A alongside Australia, South Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands. Harmanpreet and her team will begin their campaign against Pakistan on June 14.
Ahead of the tournament, all 12 captains attended an ICC press conference. During the media interaction, a reporter asked Harmanpreet whether this could be her final T20 World Cup.
Her response immediately caught everyone’s attention.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s Reply to Reporter Goes Viral
The conversation unfolded in an interesting way.
Reporter: “Is this going to be your last World Cup?”
Harmanpreet Kaur: “Why?”
Reporter: “I am just asking.”
Harmanpreet Kaur: “Do you think I should stop?”
Harmanpreet Kaur: “So why are you asking this question?”
Reporter: “Not at all.”
The exchange quickly became popular on social media. Many cricket fans compared the moment to a famous press conference involving former India captain MS Dhoni.
Back in 2016, Dhoni was asked about his retirement plans by an Australian journalist. The legendary wicketkeeper-batter responded with a series of questions of his own, leaving the entire room laughing.
Harmanpreet has enjoyed a remarkable international career since making her debut in 2009. She has played 197 T20 Internationals and scored 4,075 runs, including one century and 17 half-centuries.
She is also India’s most successful women’s captain. Under her leadership, India won the Asian Games gold medal in 2023 and the Commonwealth Games silver medal in 2022.
Now, Harmanpreet will aim to guide India to their first-ever Women’s T20 World Cup title in 2026.
