Shubman Gill Opens Up on India T20I Comeback After Stellar IPL 2026 Season

India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill has spoken about his chances of returning to the Indian T20I team after an impressive IPL 2026 campaign with the Gujarat Titans.

Gill was left out of India’s squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup. The decision came after a difficult 2025 season in T20 internationals. He scored 291 runs in 15 matches at an average of 24.25. Despite being India’s vice-captain during the successful Asia Cup campaign last year, he could not retain his place in the squad.

India went on to win the T20 World Cup under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav. However, Gill did not let the setback affect him. He worked hard on improving his T20 game and delivered strong performances in the IPL.

The Gujarat Titans skipper has enjoyed a fantastic season. He has scored 722 runs in 15 innings at a strike rate of 163.72. His performances have once again put him in contention for a place in India’s T20I side.

Shubman Gill focused on improving across all formats

Ahead of Gujarat Titans’ IPL 2026 final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gill said his main focus is on becoming a better batter in every format.

“I’d be happy to play if I get picked for the T20 team. Honestly, I want to keep working on my game. I want to keep getting better as a T20 batsman, as an ODI batsman, as a Test batsman. You know, cricket is such a game that you can never really get perfect, but obviously, you can strive for it, and that’s what I try to do,” Shubman was quoted as saying by News18.

Gill also spoke about the importance of preparation in his career.

“I think preparation is what keeps me mentally fresh, knowing what I need to do the next week, next couple of weeks or in the next series or next tournament, and preparing for that. It’s about knowing the things that are in my control or knowing the things that I need to do well to be able to succeed and what we need to do well as a team to be able to succeed is what I think keeps me mentally fit,” Shubman concluded.
