Murugan Ashwin retires from domestic cricket and IPL career

Former Indian Premier League spinner Murugan Ashwin has announced his retirement from domestic cricket and the IPL. The 35-year-old leg-spinner made the announcement through his official Instagram account. His decision means he will no longer play in tournaments organised by the BCCI, including the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Ashwin last played in the IPL in 2023. He represented several franchises during his career. These included Rising Pune Supergiant, Delhi Daredevils, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Kings XI Punjab, Mumbai Indians, and Rajasthan Royals. In 44 IPL matches, he picked up 35 wickets with an economy rate of just above 8.00.

Murugan Ashwin open to new opportunities

While retiring from domestic cricket, Ashwin said he still wants to continue playing the game in other competitions. This could open the door for him to join legends leagues in the future.

“I would like to announce that I have decided to call time on my domestic cricket career and my journey in the IPL. I will, however, be exploring new challenges and opportunities, and I look forward to continuing to play the game as competitively as always,” Ashwin wrote.

The Tamil Nadu spinner also spoke about his long journey in cricket.

“Since I started playing cricket at the age of six, I have been deeply in love with the game, and it has blessed me abundantly. Cricket has shaped me into the person I am today and allowed me to truly express myself on the field. It’s been an incredible ride so far,” the veteran spinner added.

He also thanked the game for giving him the chance to play under leaders like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Rohit Sharma during his IPL career.
