India Allows Pakistan in Multilateral Sports, Keeps Ban on Bilateral Series

The Government of India has shared its latest policy on sports ties with Pakistan. The decision brings some clarity. It allows participation in global events but keeps restrictions on bilateral series.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports released an official memorandum. It clearly stated that ‘Pakistani players and teams will be able to participate in multilateral events hosted by India.’ This means Pakistan athletes can compete in tournaments held in India.

The policy also supports Indian participation abroad. It confirmed that Indian teams will play in global events even if Pakistan is involved. The memo said, ‘Indian teams and individual players will take part in international events that also have teams or players from Pakistan. Similarly, Pakistani players and teams will be able to participate in such multilateral events hosted by India’.

This is an important move. It comes after tensions increased following the Pahalgam attack in April 2025. Since then, sporting ties between the two nations have remained limited.

No bilateral matches but easier visa process

The government has kept a strict stand on bilateral sports. The memorandum clearly stated, “Insofar as bilateral sports events in each other’s country are concerned, Indian teams will not be participating in competitions in Pakistan. Nor will we permit Pakistani teams to play in India,” the memorandum said.

However, there is some relaxation in other areas. The government plans to make visa rules easier. This will help athletes and officials travel without delay.

The memo said visa procedures for ‘sportspersons, team officials, technical personnel, and office-bearers of International Sports Governing Bodies shall be simplified.’ It added, “This (simplified visa process) shall facilitate their smooth movement into and within the country, in accordance with international norms,” the memo said.

This step comes as India aims to host major global events. The country is preparing bids for future tournaments. The new policy tries to balance politics and international sports commitments.
