The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has started an investigation into Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz after he tested positive for recreational drug use. The board is reviewing his case and will decide his future after completing the process.
According to reports, the positive test result came during routine checks conducted at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup earlier this year. The International Cricket Council informed the PCB about the matter, after which the board began its disciplinary procedure.
All-rounder continues PSL participation as Surrey deal collapses amid ongoing probe
A PCB spokesperson confirmed the development and said that the process is underway. The board will share its findings with the ICC once the investigation is complete.
Despite the issue, Nawaz is currently playing in the Pakistan Super League. He is representing Multan Sultans in the ongoing season. The 32-year-old has featured regularly and is available for selection while the investigation continues.
In a recent match in Karachi, Nawaz bowled three overs but failed to take a wicket. His team secured a comfortable six-wicket win. So far this season, he has scored 36 runs and picked up six wickets in eight matches.
The controversy has already impacted his career outside Pakistan. Nawaz was set to join Surrey County Cricket Club for the T20 Blast in England. The PCB had also granted him a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) earlier. However, the deal has now been cancelled following the positive test result.
Nawaz has been an important player for Pakistan in white-ball cricket. He has played 6 Tests, 44 ODIs, and 98 T20Is. Across formats, he has taken 166 wickets and scored 1,593 runs.
During the T20 World Cup, Nawaz played all seven matches for Pakistan. He took seven wickets and scored 15 runs. Pakistan were eliminated in the Super Eight stage of the tournament.
The PCB’s final decision will be crucial for Nawaz’s future. It could affect his place in the national team and his chances in global leagues.
