ICC Invites Host Cities for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028 in Australia and New Zealand

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has started the process to select host cities for the 2028 ICC T20 World Cup. Australia and New Zealand will co-host the tournament. The ICC has sent invitations to venues in both countries to take part in the bidding process.

The 2028 edition will have 10 venues across Australia and New Zealand. The final list of venues will be announced by the end of 2026. The tournament will take place between October and November.

A total of 20 teams will play in the competition. So far, 12 teams have already qualified. These include hosts Australia and New Zealand. Other teams are England, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, and Zimbabwe. They qualified after reaching the Super Eight stage in the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Bangladesh, Ireland, and Afghanistan have also secured their spots. They qualified based on their T20I rankings. The remaining eight teams will come through regional qualifiers.

Tournament details and host plans

The tournament will have 55 matches. There will be 40 group matches and 12 Super Eight matches. Two semi-finals and a final will complete the event.

Australia last hosted the T20 World Cup in 2022. England won that edition by beating Pakistan in the final. Famous venues like the MCG, SCG, and WACA are likely to be selected again.

New Zealand last hosted a major ICC men’s event in 2015. They co-hosted the ODI World Cup that year.

2028 ICC T20 World Cup CEO Joel Morrison shared his views. He said, “The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2028 will be the biggest cricket event ever staged in the southern hemisphere. Australia and New Zealand will host the best players and teams in the world, including arguably the hottest property in sport, reigning champions India.”

He added, “Cricket World Cups are mega events and they deliver significant social, economic and promotional benefits to host cities. Key to maximising these outcomes and executing a world class event is cricket’s commitment to a partnership approach with governments, venues, commercial and broadcast partners and local communities. We look forward to working with prospective partners through this process as we seek to unite and inspire fans globally through a spectacular festival of cricket that extends its benefits far beyond the cricket field.”

India are the current champions. They won the 2026 title by defeating New Zealand in Ahmedabad.
