Bangladesh cricket is facing another big challenge. The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is once again in the news because of financial problems involving several teams.
The BPL governing council had asked all five franchises to submit a mandatory bank guarantee of BDT 10 crore each. This bank guarantee is very important. It is a financial assurance that teams must provide so the tournament can run without issues.
The original deadline was extended to November 18. Many teams had asked for more time. But even after the extension, things did not go smoothly.
Only Three Teams Submitted Guarantees
Three franchises managed to submit their bank guarantees. These teams were Dhaka Capitals, Rajshahi Warriors, and Rangpur Riders. But reports say one of these teams did not submit the full amount. Two other franchises, Chattogram Royals and Sylhet Titans, failed to submit any guarantee.
BPL governing council secretary Iftekhar Rahman Mithu spoke to The Daily Star. He said that the board might have to extend the deadline again. He explained the risks of running the league without proper guarantees.
“If any franchise fails to provide the bank guarantee, their franchise fee of BDT 2 crore will be forfeited. But proceeding without the guarantee risks repeating past issues. Teams can also submit a Fixed Deposit lien, which we can break at any time,” he said.
The situation has created fresh uncertainty for the 12th edition of the BPL. However, the board is moving ahead with an important plan the return of the players’ auction.
The auction is returning after 12 years. The last auctions took place in 2012 and 2013, during the league’s early years. After that, the BPL used a draft system for nine straight seasons. Now, the auction system is back again.
The players’ auction will be held on November 23. The event will take place at a hotel in Dhaka. All five teams—Dhaka, Chattogram, Rajshahi, Rangpur, and Sylhet—will join the auction.

The auction will begin with local players. Then foreign players will be called. Each team must pick at least 11 local players. They can choose up to 15. Players who have already signed directly with a team will not be part of the auction.
Despite the financial issues, the BPL is preparing for a major moment. All eyes will be on how teams build their squads for the new season.
