Canada Super 60 Kicks off Women’s Trophy; Names Tournament after Mel Jones

Canada’s new cricket league, Canada Super 60, has announced a historic step. Its first-ever Women’s Trophy will be named in honour of Mel Jones. She is a former Australian cricketer, a respected broadcaster, and a strong voice for women’s cricket worldwide.

Canada Super 60 is the first ten-over-a-side event to launch with both men’s and women’s tournaments in its opening season. The matches will take place inside the famous BC Place stadium in Vancouver. International stars will play alongside Canadian talent.

Canada Super 60 Honours legends of women’s cricket

The league said that every year, the Women’s Trophy will be named after a global legend of women’s cricket. This tradition will celebrate those who shaped the game and inspire young cricketers.

This year, Mel Jones was chosen for her cricket career and her leadership off the field. She has been praised for her efforts by the ICC and others around the world.

Jones also helped Afghan women cricketers after the Taliban takeover in 2021. She worked to evacuate them to Australia, found resources for them, and co-founded the Pitch Our Future initiative. The programme supported their education and cricket careers. In 2025, Jones received the MCC Spirit of Cricket Award for this work.

Because of her efforts, many Afghan players were able to find refuge abroad. Two of them are now living in Canada after the Canadian government approved their refugee applications. This matches the vision of Canada Super 60, which sees cricket as a tool for inclusion and opportunity.

“This honour from Canada Super 60 truly humbles me,” said Mel Jones. “To have the Women’s Trophy named after me is something very special. What excites me most is the vision behind this initiative – creating more opportunities and visibility for women’s cricket, especially in associate nations. Platforms like Canada Super 60 will inspire and empower a new generation of players. My hope is that one day, a Canadian cricket legend will have this trophy named after them, as the women’s game continues to grow in this country.”

League chairman Abhishek Shah added:

“We are grateful to Mel Jones for allowing us to name our Women’s Trophy after her. Mel’s leadership as a cricketer, broadcaster, and champion of women’s cricket has been exceptional. Her role in helping Afghan cricketers during a time of crisis is an inspiring example of what it means to use sport as a force for good. At Canada Super 60, we share her vision of developing women’s cricket, particularly in associate nations, and we are proud to carry this forward through our league.”

The Canada Super 60 Women’s Trophy will be presented at BC Place in Vancouver during the first edition of the tournament from October 8–13, 2025.
