Who Will Replace Axar Patel as India’s T20 Vice-Captain for Asia Cup 2025?

Axar Patel was named as Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy for the five-match T20I series against England earlier this year. He got the role because of his consistent performances in T20 cricket.

The Gujarat all-rounder did not do much with the bat in that series. But he impressed with the ball. Axar took six wickets in five matches. His bowling average was 16.50.

In IPL 2025, Axar also showed his leadership skills. He captained Delhi Capitals well. However, his team could not reach the playoffs.

Shubman Gill in Line for Vice-Captain Role

Despite his steady work as a leader, Axar may soon lose his vice-captain position. According to a report by RevSportz, Shubman Gill could replace him. The change may happen before the Asia Cup 2025. The tournament will be played in the UAE from September 9 to September 28.

Gill recently led India in the five-match Test series against England. He was the top run-scorer in the series. The Punjab batter scored 754 runs in 10 innings. His average was 75.40. India fought hard to draw the series 2-2.

Shubman has not played T20I cricket since July 2024. In 21 matches, he has scored 578 runs. His average is 30.42. His strike rate is 139.28.

Shubman’s return to the T20 side could lead to changes in the batting order. Sanju Samson is expected to open as a wicketkeeper-batter. Shubman, who also opens in the IPL, might join him at the top.

This could put pressure on Abhishek Sharma’s spot. Abhishek was the highest run-scorer in the recent T20I series against England. But with Samson, Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal in the mix, his place is not certain.

The Asia Cup will be an important test for India before the T20 World Cup next year. Team balance and leadership choices could play a key role in their success.
