New Zealand Cricket has officially named former all-rounder Jacob Oram as the new bowling coach for the Black Caps. Oram, who boasts an extensive background both as a player and coach, will take over the role starting October 7. He fills the vacancy left by Shane Jurgensen, who departed in November 2023.
The 46-year-old Oram began his coaching journey in 2014, initially serving as the bowling coach for New Zealand A. His coaching portfolio expanded as he took charge of the New Zealand Women’s cricket team’s bowling department from 2018 to March 2022, including their campaign in the Women’s ODI World Cup.
Oram’s experience also extends to domestic and franchise cricket, where he led the Central Hinds in the Super Smash and served as the assistant coach for the Northern Warriors in the T10 league. Most recently, he was the bowling coach for MI Cape Town in the SA20 league.
‘I’m really excited to have the opportunity to be involved with the Black Caps again’ – Jacob Oram
Expressing his excitement about rejoining the Black Caps, Oram stated, “I’m really excited to have the opportunity to be involved with the Black Caps again. To be back involved with a team that means so much to me and has been a big part of my life is a real honor. The recent opportunities I’ve had have been a great insight into where this team is going, and I’m excited to continue that work in the coming seasons.”
Oram is particularly optimistic about the emerging talent in New Zealand’s bowling ranks, stating his eagerness to share his knowledge and experience with the next generation of cricketers.
Gary Stead, the head coach of the New Zealand men’s team, welcomed Oram’s appointment, noting that his rich coaching experience, particularly in franchise cricket, would be instrumental in further developing New Zealand’s bowling unit.
Oram’s recent contributions during the Test series against Bangladesh, which ended in a 1-1 draw, were well-received, solidifying his position as the team’s new bowling coach.
