‘They Remind Me of Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar’: Robin Uthappa Lauds Young Indian Batters

Former Indian batter Robin Uthappa has recently praised the young Indian opening duo of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, comparing them to the legendary pair of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. Known for their successful partnerships, Tendulkar and Ganguly are considered one of the greatest opening pairs in Indian cricket history. Uthappa’s comparison highlights the growing excitement around Gill and Jaiswal’s burgeoning partnership.

Uthappa’s remarks came after India’s thrilling win over Sri Lanka in the third T20I, completing a series whitewash. Speaking on the Sony Sports network, he emphasized the synergy between Gill and Jaiswal, noting how their complementary styles remind him of Tendulkar and Ganguly’s legendary partnership.

‘Their strategies complemented each other’ – Robin Uthappa

“I do see them, when I look at them they remind me of Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar going out together, where their games kind of complemented each other. Their strategies complemented each other, that’s what I see when I see these two go out to bat together,” Uthappa said.

The former cricketer turned commentator also discussed the potential for Jaiswal to expand his portfolio in the one-day format, positioning himself as an all-format player. He noted that Jaiswal, who has already established a strong foundation in Test cricket and T20s, would find it relatively easier to adapt to ODIs due to the additional time available to build his innings.

“I honestly feel when he (Jaiswal) gets that opportunity in ODI cricket, he will seal that spot so quickly because after Test cricket and T20I cricket, ODI cricket is going to be so much easier for him. Because he will feel like I have all the time in the world to be able to score runs,” Uthappa added.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, yet to make his ODI debut, has already accumulated impressive statistics in other formats. He has scored 1028 runs in Tests at an average of 69, including three centuries and four half-centuries. In T20Is, Jaiswal has amassed 713 runs from 21 innings, featuring one hundred and five fifties.
