‘Some players still avoid playing white-ball cricket’ – Dav Whatmore Slams Hardik Pandya for Skipping Domestic Cricket

Former Baroda coach Dav Whatmore has openly criticized Hardik Pandya for his absence from domestic cricket. The all-rounder, who hails from Baroda, last played a first-class match in 2018 and hasn’t participated in a domestic T20 game since 2016.

The BCCI, in their 2023-24 annual central contract announcement, emphasized the importance of domestic cricket, urging players to participate in the Ranji Trophy and other domestic tournaments. Following this directive, Hardik Pandya is expected to play in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy for Baroda, with selectors keeping a close eye on his fitness in white-ball cricket.

‘Hardik Pandya hasn’t played for Barods in years’ – Dav Whatmore

In an interview on the Pakistani YouTube channel PakPassion, Whatmore, an Australian, expressed his surprise at Pandya’s sporadic appearances in domestic cricket. He highlighted that despite being labeled as an all-rounder from Baroda, Pandya has not represented his domestic team in years.

“Some players still avoid playing white-ball cricket. For instance, during my tenure in Baroda, Hardik Pandya rarely played white-ball cricket. It always amuses me that he’s called the all-rounder from Baroda, yet he hasn’t played for them in years!” Whatmore remarked.

Whatmore also praised the BCCI’s recent efforts to promote domestic cricket, ensuring that the longer format of the game is not overlooked.

“Recently, I’ve noticed the BCCI’s determination to have players participate in the Ranji Trophy and other formats to ensure cricket is seen as a comprehensive sport. They are making sure that four-day cricket is not neglected,” he added.

Pandya’s career has been plagued by injuries, which have often kept him out of action. Nevertheless, he remains a crucial player for the Indian senior cricket team, having played a key role in their recent T20 World Cup victory after a 17-year wait.

Pandya is set to feature in the upcoming three-match T20 series against Sri Lanka starting July 27. However, he will not participate in the ODI series due to personal commitments.
