Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has recently emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive plan for the Indian cricket team’s upcoming global tournaments.
Amidst widespread speculation, Gautam Gambhir is emerging as the leading candidate to succeed Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the Men’s Senior Indian Cricket team.
Rahul Dravid, the current head coach, had earlier announced that the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 would be his final assignment in this role.
Aakash Chopra Discusses Gautam Gambhir’s Potential Challenges in Tenure as Indian Head Coach
In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra discussed the potential challenges that Gautam Gambhir would face if appointed as the head coach of the Indian cricket team. Chopra highlighted the need for Gambhir to craft a robust roadmap, particularly for veteran active players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja.
Chopra discussed, “Gautam Gambhir has given the interview. It’s been said that it was a virtual interview, while WV Raman delivered a fantastic presentation. From what I’ve read, Gambhir is the frontrunner in this race. It will be an interesting tenure because managing the transition is never easy.”
“Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Mohammed Shami, maybe Ravindra Jadeja, especially their roles in T20s, there are plenty of people who are on the wrong side of 30, 35 to 37, including Ravichandran Ashwin,” Aakash further remarked.
Chopra also noted that Gambhir would need to focus on preparations for several marquee tournaments, including the ODI World Cup 2027, the World Test Championship 2027, and the T20 World Cup 2026, which will be hosted in India and Sri Lanka.
“In the next three to four years, when the 2027 World Cup comes, you have to prepare your team for that. There will also be a WTC in 2027 and a T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in 2026. So a very important roadmap will have to be prepared,” Chopra added.
Gautam Gambhir’s recent success as a mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024 has bolstered his reputation, making him a strong contender for the prestigious head coach position.
