Former cricketer Wasim Jaffer recently shared his thoughts on the Indian cricket team’s surprising decision to include Rajasthan Royals’ batting sensation Dhruv Jurel for the five-match Test series against England. The series, part of the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle, saw England touring India earlier this year.
The intense series featured five debutants for India: Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Akash Deep, Dhruv Jurel, and Devdutt Padikkal. While Patidar failed to make a mark, the other four showcased their potential admirably.
Dhruv Jurel‘s inclusion was particularly significant as it addressed India’s wicket-keeping concerns, with star players like Rishabh Pant recovering, KL Rahul injured, and KS Bharat out of form.

Wasim Jaffer, speaking on The Ranveer Show podcast, expressed his initial surprise at Jurel’s selection as a wicket-keeper batter. He highlighted how Jurel’s impressive performances in the IPL caught the selectors’ attention, leading to his unexpected but successful entry into the Test squad.
“I was surprised because he suddenly came into the scene. He was nowhere in the picture. Credit should be given to those who scouted him. To bring him suddenly into the Test team because he wasn’t in the reckoning. Either it was Rishabh Pant, or KS Bharat, or KL Rahul. They brought him out of nowhere and realized that it can work well,” Jaffer commented.
Jurel made a remarkable debut in the third Test against England in Rajkot, replacing KS Bharat and scoring a significant 46 runs. He followed this up with an even more impressive 90 in the subsequent match.
“Jurel should be patted on the back too for the way he responded, scoring 90 against England. Then in the IPL too. He has the skills. It’s not just him. Actually, many more have it. It’s just about getting a chance,” Jaffer added.
The 23-year-old concluded the series with an impressive 190 runs from four innings, averaging 63.33, solidifying his place as a promising talent for India’s cricketing future.
