Dale Steyn, the legendary South African fast bowler, has officially stepped down as the bowling coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. The former pacer announced his decision, expressing his gratitude to the franchise while confirming his continued role with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 league.
Steyn’s association with SRH came to a pause in the IPL 2024 when he missed the season due to personal reasons. His absence prompted the team management to bring in former New Zealand cricketer James Franklin as a temporary replacement. Working closely with head coach Daniel Vettori, Franklin played a significant role in guiding SRH to their first IPL final since 2018.
‘A big thank you to Sunrisers Hyderabad’ – Dale Steyn
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Steyn thanked the SRH family, stating, “A big thank you to Sunrisers Hyderabad for my few years with them as bowling coach at the IPL, unfortunately, I won’t be returning for IPL 2025. However, I will continue to work with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 here in South Africa.”
Steyn’s legacy in the IPL is notable, having represented franchises like Deccan Chargers, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Gujarat Lions. Despite his illustrious playing career, SRH’s performances under his coaching fell short, with the team finishing at the bottom of the table in IPL 2022 and 2023. However, the bowling unit, under his guidance, remained a strong force in the league.
With Steyn’s departure, SRH is expected to retain Daniel Vettori as head coach and James Franklin as bowling coach for the upcoming season, hoping to build on the progress made during the IPL 2024, where they reached the finals but lost to Kolkata Knight Riders.
