Tim Southee To Retire From Tests After Test Series Against England

Veteran New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee has announced his retirement from Test cricket, marking the upcoming series against England as his farewell. The 35-year-old confirmed that the Hamilton Test could be his final appearance unless New Zealand qualifies for the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final.

Southee, who boasts 385 Test wickets among his 770 international scalps, has been a cornerstone of New Zealand cricket for nearly two decades. A key player in New Zealand’s WTC triumph against India in 2021, he is widely regarded as one of the country’s greatest bowlers.

Reflecting on his decision, Southee shared, “Representing New Zealand was my childhood dream, and to have done so for 18 years has been an honor. Test cricket holds a special place in my heart, and playing this series against the same opponent I debuted against feels like the perfect way to close this chapter of my career.”

New Zealand Cricket Chief Executive Scott Weenink praised Southee’s impact, calling him “a giant of the modern New Zealand game.” He added, “From his debut against England in Napier 18 summers ago, Tim has been integral to the BLACKCAPS’ success and will leave an enduring legacy.”

The Test series begins on November 28 at Hagley Oval, followed by matches at Basin Reserve and Seddon Park.
