Former Indian head coach Rahul Dravid has shared his thoughts on cricket being included in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recently announced cricket as one of five new sports, alongside baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse, and squash, following their meeting in Mumbai.

Cricket at the 2028 Olympics will be played in the T20 format, featuring six teams each in both the men’s and women’s competitions.
During an event at India House celebrating India’s success at the Paris Olympics 2024, Dravid reflected on his Olympic memories and the aspiration to participate in such a prestigious event. “If you love sport as I have, you grow up with the Olympics. My earliest memories are of Carl Lewis winning at the Olympics and television coming to India. We were glued to the TV, watching these great athletes. You always wanted to be part of a great event,” Dravid said. “In cricket, we have major events, but they are individual. Being part of the Olympics’ environment, energy, and vibe is a dream for any athlete.”
Reflecting on India’s campaign in the T20 World Cup 2024, co-hosted by the USA and West Indies, Dravid highlighted the potential of cricket in America. “We know there is an incredible audience for cricket in the USA. The number of people traveling from the USA to other World Cup events shows the passion for the game there. Growing the game and seeing more people play was phenomenal. Cricket always felt like it belonged in the Olympics. It’s a great game followed by many worldwide. As a fan now, it’s truly fantastic,” he added.
With India being one of the dominant teams in cricket, there is great anticipation for their performance in both the men’s and women’s cricket events at the LA Olympics 2028. The inclusion of cricket in the Olympics is seen as a significant step in promoting the sport globally, particularly in markets like the USA.
