Shimron Hetmyer Returns as West Indies Names ODI Squad for England Series

Cricket West Indies has announced its 15-man squad for the upcoming ODI series against England, set to begin on Thursday in Antigua. In a notable comeback, Shimron Hetmyer reclaims his spot in the squad, replacing Alick Athanaze, after a nearly year-long absence from ODIs.

The West Indies squad largely mirrors the one that recently returned from a white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, which ended in a 2-1 defeat. Hetmyer, known for his dynamic middle-order batting, last represented the ODI team in December 2023, contributing to a series win against England. However, he missed the series in Sri Lanka due to personal commitments and now rejoins the squad with high expectations from fans and the coaching staff.

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy expressed enthusiasm about facing England, highlighting the historic rivalry between the teams. “Playing against England always provides a new challenge and reignites a rivalry that the players and the people of the Caribbean are eager for. Somehow, we West Indies always find a way to raise our game when we face England,” Sammy noted.

Reflecting on the West Indies’ recent home success against England, Sammy emphasized the significance of the series in the broader goal of qualifying for the ICC Men’s World Cup 2027. “This rivalry goes back for decades, and after defeating them last year at home for the first time in a long time in an ODI series, we’re ready to face the challenge of a strong England squad again. It’s always special to play at home, where the local support brings energy and passion to every match. With our sights set on qualifying for the ICC Men’s World Cup in 2027, we’ve selected a balanced squad that will no doubt push and compete with one of the best teams in the world,” he added.

The Shai Hope-led team will clash with England in a three-match ODI series, followed by a five-match T20 series across the Caribbean.
