Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have announced their IPL 2025 retention list, making strategic adjustments by releasing key players, including skipper Faf du Plessis and star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, while retaining Virat Kohli as the central figure.
Despite frequent playoff appearances, RCB is yet to secure their first IPL title. With this year’s retention, RCB management is focusing on a balanced roster that combines experience with emerging talent. Kohli, retained for Rs 21 crore, remains the face of the franchise and a key figure in their plans. Alongside him, young talents Rajat Patidar (Rs 11 crore) and pacer Yash Dayal (Rs 5 crore) have been retained, solidifying a promising lineup.
The release of Faf du Plessis, who captained RCB to multiple playoff berths over the last three seasons, was a surprising decision. Despite his impactful performances, including standout scores in recent seasons, the 40-year-old was let go as RCB looks to invest in younger talent while also maintaining financial flexibility. The franchise may seek to reacquire du Plessis during the auction at a more budget-friendly price.
Other notable releases include Glenn Maxwell and Mohammed Siraj, both of whom had underwhelming performances in IPL 2024 but continue to make waves on the international cricket stage. RCB’s revamped approach reflects their desire for a fresh start with new energy and a chance at their elusive maiden IPL trophy.
With Rs 83 crore remaining in their auction purse and two RTM cards available, RCB has the flexibility to make significant acquisitions in the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction.
