Former Indian batter Robin Uthappa has shared his insights on the potential hurdles the Indian cricket team might encounter in their upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 match against Afghanistan. Set to begin their Super Eights campaign on June 20 at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, India will face a formidable Afghan side.
Despite India’s clean sweep in the group stage, the team’s batting has been a cause for concern. Star player Virat Kohli has managed only five runs in three matches, putting significant pressure on the middle order, which has struggled for form.
Robin Uthappa Reflects On India’s Probable Struggle with the bat Against Afghanistan
During a discussion on Ravichandran Ashwin’s YouTube channel, Uthappa highlighted that the match would be a clash between India’s powerful batting lineup and Afghanistan’s potent bowling attack. He expressed confidence that the Indian batters would rise to the occasion despite their recent struggles.
“I think this game is going to be Afghanistan’s bowling versus India’s batting. I think that’s where the competition is. Their bowlers are of pretty high caliber. You can take Naveen-ul-Haq, Fazalhaq Farooqi. I like Omarzai also with the ball. Karim Janat is pretty decent with the ball. Noor Ahmed is very good. So, I feel like they will have a lot of questions that they will ask the Indian batters. But will Indian batters have the answers? I certainly think so. But if they have a chance, that’s where they have a chance,” Uthappa remarked.
He further emphasized the importance of the Indian batters finding their form. “The Indian batters necessarily haven’t come to the party. They haven’t looked as convincing as we know them to be. Confidence in this form is not there currently. Caliber is definitely there. Potential is 100% there. Now, turning that into performance in a big tournament like this, the start has been that sort where the flow is not there,” Uthappa added.
India’s bowling unit has been impressive, consistently taking wickets in the group stage matches against the USA, Pakistan, and Ireland, although the game against Canada was washed out due to rain.
