The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has named Mohammad Rizwan as the new captain for Pakistan’s white-ball teams, with Salman Ali Agha appointed as vice-captain. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced the leadership change on Sunday, shortly after releasing the squad for the limited-overs series against Australia and Zimbabwe.
In an official press conference, Naqvi voiced the board’s full support for Rizwan’s new role, saying, “We will give him all the support that is needed. We need to back our young talent, and we also need to strengthen our domestic cricket structure.” This move follows Babar Azam’s decision to step down as captain to focus on his performance, which Naqvi clarified, stating, “Babar was not pushed by the board to leave the captaincy. Azam wanted to focus on his personal performance.”
‘Representing Pakistan on the global stage is the greatest privilege’ – Mohammed Rizwan
Rizwan, a consistent performer and wicketkeeper-batsman, expressed deep gratitude for the role. “I am deeply honored to be appointed as Pakistan’s white-ball captain,” Rizwan said during the press conference. “Representing Pakistan on the global stage is the greatest privilege, and to now be entrusted with leading such a talented and exciting group of players is a tremendous honour. I am committed to giving my absolute best in this role and look forward to working closely with the selectors, coaches, and my immensely talented teammates. Together, we aim to meet and exceed the expectations of our fans and supporters.”
Pakistan’s white-ball squad will face Australia from November 4 to 18, with Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Naseem Shah back in the lineup. The trio will be rested for the Zimbabwe tour, which is scheduled from November 24 to December 5. Rizwan will lead the team in both the Australia series and Zimbabwe ODIs, and will be rested from the Zimbabwe T20Is, providing an opportunity for the squad to showcase new leadership under his guidance.
