Mitchell Santner Named New Zealand’s Interim Captain for Sri Lanka Series

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has appointed all-rounder Mitchell Santner as the interim captain of the national white-ball team for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. Santner takes on the leadership role following Kane Williamson’s decision to step down as captain after the Blackcaps’ early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024.

The Kiwis will face Sri Lanka in a two-match T20I series followed by three ODIs, starting on November 9 in Dambulla. This series will be crucial as New Zealand begins preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 and the ODI World Cup in 2027.

In an official announcement, New Zealand selector Sam Wells highlighted the importance of this tour for the team’s future:
“This series is a key step in building depth for future pinnacle events. With Williamson stepping down, we are focusing on grooming a core squad for the ICC Champions Trophy and the ODI World Cup. It’s exciting to have young talents in the mix.”
