Cricket Australia (CA) has appointed Mitchell Marsh as the captain for the forthcoming tours of Scotland and England. Pat Cummins, the regular Test captain, has been given a break from both series, which will feature a total of 11 matches.
Following his impressive performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Delhi Capitals, Jake Fraser-McGurk is set to open the batting for Australia, filling the shoes of the recently retired David Warner. Another fresh face in the squad is Cooper Connolly, who earned his place after an outstanding season in the 2023-24 Big Bash League (BBL) and will serve as the team’s finisher.
Matthew Wade and Ashton Agar have been omitted from the squad, with Josh Inglis taking on the wicket keeping duties. Veteran stars Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell are also absent, as the management aims to manage their workload for future commitments.
‘This tour gives us a great opportunity to bring in some new players’ – George Bailey, Australia’s chief selector
George Bailey, CA’s chief selector, expressed enthusiasm about the tours, highlighting the opportunity for new talent to shine while seasoned players prepare for the busy home season ahead. “This tour gives us a great opportunity to bring in some new players in the absence of David Warner and Matthew Wade, as well as giving some senior players time to prepare for the home summer and a busy first half of next year. We are particularly pleased to offer Cooper his first opportunity in the T20 squad having introduced the likes of Jake, Spencer, Xavier and Aaron in the past 12 months. They are exciting prospects to join the likes of Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis and Josh Inglis in the white-ball setup.”
