Mahela Jayawardene is set to return as the head coach of Mumbai Indians for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. The Sri Lankan legend previously held the role of Mumbai Indians’ global head since 2022, with Mark Boucher managing the team as head coach during this period. After a disappointing campaign in IPL 2024, the franchise has turned back to Jayawardene, hoping his leadership will guide the team to better results.

Mumbai Indians announced Jayawardene’s comeback in an official statement, emphasizing his proven track record and the value he brings to the team. “We are delighted to have Mahela back as the head coach. His knowledge and passion for the game have always been a driving force for MI. We also extend our gratitude to Mark Boucher for his dedication and valuable contributions over the last two seasons,” the statement read.
Boucher will transition to one of Mumbai Indians’ sister franchises in either the ILT20, SA20, or Major League Cricket, according to a report by Cricbuzz. His move aims to strengthen Mumbai Indians’ presence across their global teams.
Jayawardene expressed his excitement about rejoining the Mumbai Indians’ setup, saying, “My journey with the MI family has always been about building something special. Now, as we look to the future, my focus will be on nurturing talent and ensuring MI continues its legacy of excellence.”
Reports also suggest that Paras Mhambrey has re-joined the Mumbai Indians’ coaching staff, alongside Lasith Malinga, who will serve as the bowling coach. Mhambrey’s return, however, has not yet been officially confirmed by the franchise.
With the IPL 2025 mega auction on the horizon, all eyes will be on how Jayawardene and his team strategize to rebuild the Mumbai Indians squad for a more successful season.
