Ahead of the highly anticipated T20 World Cup 2024 semi final clash between India and England, former Indian captain Kapil Dev has weighed in on the leadership styles of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Kapil Dev highlighted the significant impact Rohit Sharma has had on the Indian cricket team, praising his selfless captaincy and the optimistic atmosphere he fosters within the team.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have both enjoyed legendary careers as the captains of the Indian cricket team, each bringing their own unique approach to leadership and training. Kapil Dev, the captain of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team, noted that while Kohli is known for his intense fitness regime and dedication to physical training, Sharma has focused more on strength and power, particularly to enhance his big-hitting capabilities.
Kapil Dev analyses Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s training methods
In an interview with ABP News, Kapil Dev emphasized that different players require different training methods to excel. He pointed out that Sharma’s understanding of his own game and physical limitations has been crucial to his success.
“If Virat Kohli can lift 150 kg and 250 kg dumbbells, that doesn’t mean Rohit should do the same. Rohit knows his game very well and plays within himself. He is not like Virat Kohli and doesn’t jump around. Rohit is aware of his limitations and there is no one better than him in that respect, not even Virat. Rohit has one pack, and that is enough to hit big sixes,” Kapil Dev stated.
Kapil Dev also hailed Rohit Sharma for his ability to keep the team united and happy, a quality that he believes sets Sharma apart from other captains.
“Many big players come and often play for themselves, even when they are captains. But Rohit gets an extra tick in the box because he keeps the entire team happy,” Kapil Dev added.
India is set to lock horns with the English in the 2nd semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Providence Stadium in Guyana, West Indies, on June 27. The winner will advance to the final to meet South Africa.
