The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced new retention and auction rules for the IPL 2025 season. Each franchise will now be allowed to retain up to six players ahead of the auction, marking a slight increase from the previous cap of five. This move is expected to offer teams more flexibility in maintaining a core squad while still building through the auction.
One of the key highlights of the revised rules is the return of the “Right to Match” (RTM) card, which allows franchises to reclaim a player they had released into the auction, by matching the highest bid made for that player. Teams will be permitted to use a maximum of two RTM cards during the auction, offering a strategic advantage to those aiming to retain key players without exceeding their purse.
Impact Player Rule to Continue for IPL 2025-27 Cycle
Additionally, the popular “Impact Player” rule, which was first introduced in the 2023 season, will continue for IPL 2025. This rule allows teams to substitute a player during the game, providing flexibility in team selection and strategy. The Impact Player rule has been well-received, enhancing the tactical depth of the game.
As per the new auction format, franchises will have to manage their auction purse wisely, with the retention of six players expected to affect the overall funds available for new signings. This has set the stage for a more competitive and dynamic auction, with teams having to strike the right balance between retaining talent and bringing in fresh faces.
With these changes, the IPL 2025 auction promises to be an exciting affair, as franchises look to build strong squads while managing the challenges of retention and the auction dynamics. The auction is likely to take place in December 2024.
