India continued their dominant home run with a comprehensive 280-run victory against Bangladesh in the first Test of the two-match series at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, starting September 19.
Bangladesh, led by Najmul Shanto, opted to bowl first after winning the toss. India initially struggled, but thanks to a stellar 7th-wicket partnership between Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, the hosts recovered to post 376. Ashwin was the standout performer, scoring a brilliant 113 off 133 balls, while Jadeja contributed 86. Hasan Mahmud shone with the ball for Bangladesh, taking an impressive 5-wicket haul.
In response, Bangladesh’s batting crumbled under pressure from India’s formidable bowling attack, collapsing to 149 all out. Jasprit Bumrah led the charge with four wickets, reaching the milestone of 400 international wickets. Shakib Al Hasan top-scored for Bangladesh with 32, but it wasn’t enough to challenge India’s bowlers.
India piled on the pressure in their second innings, scoring 286/4 declared, powered by centuries from Shubman Gill (119) and Rishabh Pant (109). Mehidy Hasan Miraz took two wickets but couldn’t stop India from setting an imposing target of 515 runs.
Chasing the mammoth total, Bangladesh showed some resistance, with captain Najmul Shanto scoring 82. However, Ashwin’s exceptional six-wicket haul dismantled Bangladesh’s efforts, bowling them out for 234 and sealing India’s massive win. Ashwin was rightfully awarded Player of the Match for his all-round brilliance.
With this emphatic victory, India takes a 1-0 lead in the series, aiming for a whitewash in the second Test.
