India’s dynamic all-rounder Hardik Pandya is set to make a long-awaited return to domestic cricket, representing Baroda in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024. The tournament begins on November 23, a day before the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Hardik, who last played in the SMAT in January 2016, will join Baroda under the captaincy of his elder brother, Krunal Pandya. This marks Hardik’s first domestic appearance since the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy, making his return a significant boost for the Baroda side.
Hardik’s Impactful SMAT Comeback
Hardik’s last SMAT game, the 2016 final against Uttar Pradesh, was pivotal in his career as he made his India debut shortly after. “Usually, the association names 18-member squads, but this time only 17 members were initially named. Hardik has now been added,” a source confirmed to Sportstar.
His absence from domestic cricket over the years was due to national commitments and injury setbacks. However, a new BCCI directive now mandates centrally contracted players to participate in domestic tournaments when not representing India. Hardik’s return aligns with this initiative, aimed at strengthening the domestic circuit.
Baroda’s Campaign
Baroda, last year’s SMAT runners-up, are in Group B alongside heavyweights like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Saurashtra. Currently leading Group A in the ongoing Ranji Trophy, Baroda will hope Hardik’s return strengthens their lineup as they face Gujarat in their SMAT opener on November 23.
Hardik’s inclusion not only boosts Baroda’s chances but also adds excitement to the tournament as fans eagerly await his performance in domestic cricket after an eight-year hiatus.
