In a significant development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to scrap the Impact Player rule from the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament. The decision, announced recently, means that teams will no longer have the option to introduce a tactical substitute during matches, a rule that has been a part of the tournament in recent editions.
The Impact Player rule allowed teams to bring in a substitute at any stage of the game to replace a player from their starting XI. This substitute could bat or bowl, providing tactical flexibility to the team. Reacting to the decision, a BCCI official stated, “We have closely monitored how the Impact Player rule influenced the game’s dynamics over the past seasons. After careful consideration, we believe that returning to the standard format will provide a more level playing field and reduce complications regarding team strategies.”
