‘Antony Must Earn the Right to Play’ – Manchester United Manager Erik Ten Hag on Brazilian Winger

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has sent a clear message to Brazilian winger Antony, stating that he must “earn the right” to play for the club. Ten Hag emphasized that team selection is based on merit and performance, adding pressure on Antony to improve. The 23-year-old winger joined United in 2022 from Ajax for £82 million, making him the club’s second-most expensive signing after Paul Pogba.

However, Antony’s performances have been underwhelming since his arrival. In 55 Premier League appearances, he has only managed five goals and three assists. Last season, his contribution was particularly disappointing, with just one goal and one assist, as Manchester United finished eighth in the Premier League.

‘You pick the team with the best chance to win’ – Eric Ten Hag

Ahead of United’s Carabao Cup third-round match against Barnsley on Tuesday, Antony will be looking to make an impact. But Ten Hag has made it clear that the winger’s future at the club is in his own hands. “He’s impatient. He wants to play. But in top football, there are rules. You pick the team with the best chance to win, with the best dynamic and chemistry. Players have to fight for their positions,” Ten Hag said.

The competition for attacking spots has increased, with players like Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Amad Diallo stepping up and delivering results. Ten Hag has emphasized that only players who perform consistently will get playing time. “Other players are doing well – they’re contributing. Antony has to get over them and earn his spot in training,” the manager added.

Regarding the upcoming cup clash, Ten Hag remained tight-lipped about the lineup, stressing that training performance will dictate who gets selected. “You will see the lineup. Players must earn the right to play through training and attitude,” he stated.

Antony has been largely sidelined this season, featuring for just one minute in United’s recent match against Brighton. The pressure is now on for him to step up and prove his worth.
