‘He is a big man for a big moment’ – AB de Villiers Extolls Hardik Pandya for heroics in T20 World Cup 2024 finals

Former cricketer AB de Villiers has come to the defense of Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya, addressing critics after Pandya’s crucial performance in the T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa. India clinched the title with a seven-run victory, thanks in part to Pandya’s stellar final over.

Pandya faced heavy criticism earlier this year when he replaced Rohit Sharma as captain of the Mumbai Indians. The team’s poor performance and early exit from the league stage intensified the backlash against Pandya.

In a recent video on his YouTube channel, de Villiers praised Pandya for handling the pressure and delivering in critical moments. He emphasized that Pandya’s journey has been tumultuous, especially with his transition from Gujarat to Mumbai and the ensuing criticism. However, his decisive over in the T20 World Cup final showcased his resilience and skill.

‘I look back and have a lot of respect for that’ – Ab de Villers

“What stands out for me are the big moments,” de Villiers said. “Hardik Pandya, who’s been through a roller-coaster himself with Mumbai Indians – moving from Gujarat to Mumbai – and all the criticism he coped with, got the ball from the captain in the final of the T20 World Cup. That was his moment to show what he is about as a cricket player. He made everyone proud. Even though I did not want him to succeed like that, I look back and have a lot of respect for that. He is a big man for a big moment and that’s exactly the way he played. To all you Mumbai Indians fans out there who doubted him, I’m pretty sure he has secured a spot in your hearts for the future.”

De Villiers believes Pandya has won over the doubters and secured a place in their hearts. Pandya’s impressive 3/20 spell in the final was pivotal in India securing their second T20 World Cup title after 17 years. Additionally, his key performance during the group stage, including a crucial wicket against Pakistan, underscored his value to the team.

Pandya’s efforts not only silenced his critics but also demonstrated his capability to thrive under immense pressure, reaffirming his status as a vital player for India.
