Cricket analyst and former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has voiced his concerns over India’s strategy in the second T20I against South Africa, particularly criticizing skipper Suryakumar Yadav for underutilizing ace spinner Axar Patel. In the low-scoring match held in Gqeberha, India posted 124 runs, only for South Africa to chase it down, clinching a narrow three-wicket win and leveling the four-match series at 1-1.
Former cricketer questions Axar Patel’s limited role in crucial bowling moments during India’s loss in Gqeberha
Chopra, on his YouTube channel, highlighted that Axar Patel bowled just one over despite spinners being highly effective on the pitch, with six of South Africa’s seven wickets falling to spin. “Why is Axar Patel only bowling one over?” Chopra questioned. “On a surface favorable to spin, where six out of seven wickets were claimed by spinners, he should have been given more opportunities.”
The commentator further questioned the decision-making behind Axar’s limited bowling role, expressing that Axar was not only underutilized in the match but also appeared to lack clarity about his role in the team. “He’s an underutilized resource,” Chopra added, noting that India’s decision-making cost them a potential win.
In the first innings, Hardik Pandya led the scoring with 39, while Axar and Tilak Varma were the only others to reach double figures. Chopra believes Suryakumar’s captaincy could be more decisive, especially in using key players like Axar strategically.
With the third T20I scheduled for November 13 in Centurion, India will look to regain momentum and make adjustments after this critical evaluation.
