Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been appointed the new head coach of Delhi Capitals ahead of the IPL 2027 season. The franchise confirmed the development on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.
The 54-year-old replaces Hemang Badani, who had been in charge since 2024. Ganguly will now look to help Delhi Capitals improve after the team finished sixth in the IPL 2026 season.
Ganguly has a long association with the Delhi Capitals franchise. He first joined the team as an Advisor in 2019. That season, Delhi reached the IPL playoffs for the first time since 2012.
He later served as BCCI President from October 2019 to October 2022. Ganguly returned to Delhi Capitals in January 2023 as Director of Cricket. He was involved with both the men’s and women’s teams.
Ganguly Ready for New Coaching Role
Ganguly said he is excited to take charge of the team and wants to build a fearless side.
“I am looking forward to take on the role of Head Coach in the IPL. Delhi Capitals is a franchise very close to my heart, and one that I have shared a strong relationship with over the years. I have worked closely with the owners, management, support staff and players, which makes this an exciting responsibility for me. We have a talented group and have played a good brand of cricket in the recent past. I am looking forward to working with the squad, the new season, and building a strong and fearless team,” Ganguly said in a statement released by DC.
Delhi Capitals Chairman and Co-owner Parth Jindal also welcomed the appointment.
“Dada is and has always been an integral part of the Delhi Capitals family. I am incredibly proud and honoured to announce that one of the greatest Indian captains and administrators is now stepping into coaching by taking over as the head coach of the Delhi Capitals. I am excited to see him take on this role and I’m sure that under his guidance and visionary leadership Delhi Capitals will be best prepared to challenge for the IPL title. I cannot wait for all our players and staff to learn from Dada and am looking forward to seeing DC in action at the earliest,” said Jindal.
Delhi Capitals have missed the playoffs in the last two seasons. Ganguly will now aim to guide the franchise towards its first IPL title in 2027.
