India defeated Pakistan by 19 runs in the men’s cricket final at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Saturday. India scored 211/6 in 20 overs before restricting Pakistan to 192/6.
The victory helped India win the gold medal in men’s cricket. It was also a special moment for young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who represented India in the final at just 15 years old.
Sooryavanshi opened the innings for India and scored 15 runs from nine balls. His knock included two sixes. He was eventually caught by Usman Khan off Saim Ayub’s bowling.
Sooryavanshi Becomes Youngest Indian Team Gold Medallist
Sooryavanshi’s appearance in the final added another major milestone to his young career. At 15 years, 6 months and 6 days, he became the youngest Indian to win an Asian Games gold medal as part of a team.
Saurabh Chaudhary remains the youngest Indian to win an individual Asian Games gold medal. However, Sooryavanshi’s achievement is another important milestone for India’s next generation of cricketers.
Harsh Vardhan, President of the Bihar Cricket Association, congratulated the youngster after India’s gold-medal triumph. He praised Sooryavanshi for representing Bihar on a major international stage.
“On behalf of the Bihar Cricket Association, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on being part of India’s historic Gold Medal-winning campaign at the Asian Games. To see a young cricketer from Bihar representing India on such a prestigious international stage and contributing to a Gold Medal-winning team is a tremendously proud moment for the entire state,” said Harsh Vardhan as quoted by The Tribune.
“Vaibhav has shown remarkable confidence, talent and fearlessness at such a young age. His journey is an inspiration for aspiring cricketers across Bihar, and we are confident that he will continue to achieve greater milestones for India and bring immense pride to Bihar,” he added.
BCA Secretary Ziaul Arfin also praised the youngster’s achievement.
“The Gold Medal at the Asian Games is a memorable achievement for Vaibhav and for the entire cricket fraternity of Bihar. Representing India at such a major multi-sport event and being part of a Gold Medal-winning team is a special accomplishment. Vaibhav has earned this opportunity through his hard work, dedication and outstanding performances,” Arfin said.
