Tata Steel has approved the sale of its entire stake in Jamshedpur Football and Sporting Private Limited (JFSPL). The company owns Indian Super League (ISL) club Jamshedpur FC.
The stake will be sold to Goa-based Churchill Brothers Sports Club Private Limited. The deal has a nominal consideration of Rs 100.
Tata Steel’s Committee of Directors approved the transaction on Friday. The deal covers all 4.08 crore equity shares held by Tata Steel in its wholly owned football subsidiary.
Tata Steel and Churchill Brothers have also signed a Share Purchase Agreement. The transaction is subject to certain conditions and approvals.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) must also approve the deal. The transaction is expected to be completed by August 31.
Churchill Brothers to take over Jamshedpur FC operations
As part of the deal, Jamshedpur FC’s ISL sporting licence will be transferred to Churchill Brothers. The transfer will follow AIFF regulations.
Churchill Brothers will also take over the contracts of 12 Jamshedpur FC players and two coaches from September 2026. This will allow them to continue their careers in the ISL.
The deal ends Tata Steel’s direct ownership of Jamshedpur FC. The club has been an important part of the company’s sporting activities in Jharkhand.
However, Tata Steel said it will continue its focus on grassroots and youth football. The company will continue identifying and developing talent from local and tribal communities.
The Tata Football Academy was established in Jamshedpur in 1987. It has trained more than 300 cadets. Around 150 of them have gone on to represent the Indian national team.
Churchill Brothers are one of India’s established football clubs. The Goa-based side has been active for nearly four decades and has won two I-League titles.
The development comes after AIFF had given Jamshedpur FC time until August 12 to reconsider its decision to stop first-team operations.
Churchill Brothers had also recently faced relegation to I-League 2. The decision followed a long legal and administrative dispute involving an I-League title controversy and their failure to participate in the Indian Football League season.:::
