Abishek Porel, the 23-year-old Bengal wicketkeeper-batter, was arrested late on Monday, August 10, 2026. The arrest followed an order from the Calcutta High Court.
Porel was taken into custody from Emami City. He is expected to be produced before a court in Chinsurah on Tuesday, August 11.
The cricketer has played 35 IPL matches for Delhi Capitals. The franchise retained him for INR 4 crore.
The case began after a woman medical student from Karnataka filed a complaint at Mogra police station on June 23, 2026.
According to the complaint, the woman met Porel in January 2023. She alleged that he took her to his flat in Mankundu and established a physical relationship after promising to marry her.
She also accused him of recording intimate videos and later using them to threaten her. The woman further alleged that Porel illegally confined her, isolated her and refused to provide her with food during their relationship.
“There was a case lodged against him and a court order to arrest him. He was arrested late last night. He will be produced in court today,” Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunar Bhushan Singh was quoted as saying on Tuesday by The Hindu.
Porel had earlier denied the allegations
Porel had denied the allegations a few months ago. He called the claims false and said he would speak about the matter after the police investigation progressed.
“I am playing well now, so things are coming up. The IPL has just ended. I am now busy with my family. Will talk about this when the police investigate. I have still not spoken to the police,” Porel said, dismissing the claims.
Porel has played 116 matches for Bengal in domestic cricket. He was born on October 17, 2002.
He is the cousin of former Punjab Kings pacer Ishan Porel. Abishek has also captained Bengal in the past.
He currently leads the Kolkata Royal Tigers. The team has been part of the Bengal Pro T20 League since its beginning.
