Suryakumar Yadav’s Indian cricket team to travel to Sri Lanka per ICC protocol despite boycott from Pakistan

The Pakistan government has officially confirmed that the Pakistan cricket team will boycott its T20 World Cup 2026 group-stage match against India. The much-awaited clash was scheduled to be played on February 15 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Pakistan will be led by Salman Ali Agha in the tournament. While the team will take part in the rest of the competition, it will not play against arch-rivals India. The decision was announced through an official post by the Pakistan government on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter).

So far, no clear reason has been given for the boycott. There has also been no detailed statement from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) or the International Cricket Council (ICC).

India to Follow ICC Protocols

Despite Pakistan’s decision, reports suggest that India will still travel to Sri Lanka as planned. The Indian squad will begin its usual pre-match preparations ahead of the February 15 fixture. The Men in Blue will wait for the match referee’s decision if Pakistan fail to take the field.

India will proceed strictly as per the protocols laid down by the ICC. Any final call on the match outcome will depend on the referee and tournament officials.

Pakistan and India are both placed in Group A of the T20 World Cup 2026. The other teams in the group are the USA, the Netherlands, and Namibia. The top two teams from the group will qualify for the Super Eight stage.

Former England batter Kevin Pietersen has questioned Pakistan’s stance. He raised an important point on social media about a possible final between the two teams.

“Not sure if India can meet Pakistan in this World Cup final due to groups and play offs, but if they can, would Pakistan refuse to play the World Cup final? Asked Pietersen on X.

Pakistan will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against the Netherlands on February 7. India will face the USA later on the same day.
