Jasprit Bumrah Likely to Miss Asia Cup 2025 to Focus on Tests

India’s star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah might not play in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. This news comes after the BCCI allowed him to leave the team during the final Test of the England tour. He skipped the match to avoid the risk of injury.

Bumrah has had a very busy schedule. During the England Test series, called the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, he bowled nearly 120 overs in just three matches. He took 14 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls. But in the third Test, he looked tired and gave away over 100 runs in one innings. This had never happened in his career before.

Bumrah May Skip Asia Cup to Stay Fit for West Indies Tests

India’s selectors and new head coach Gautam Gambhir had earlier said that Bumrah would not play all five Tests in England. Their goal was to keep him fit and manage his workload carefully.

Now, with the Asia Cup starting on September 9 and a West Indies Test series soon after, Bumrah may skip the Asia Cup. The selectors must decide whether to include him in the T20 tournament or rest him for the more important Test matches. These matches carry points for the World Test Championship.

A BCCI official told PTI, “It will be a tricky call, but Bumrah loves Test cricket. There are WTC points at stake. He can play the T20 series against New Zealand in January. That series will help prepare for the 2026 T20 World Cup.”

The board is also thinking about reducing Bumrah’s role in limited-overs cricket. He may play fewer ODIs and T20Is to stay fit for big Test matches. His return in T20s could happen in the New Zealand series, which is just before the T20 World Cup.

India will begin their Asia Cup 2025 journey on September 10 against UAE. They will then play Pakistan on September 14. With Bumrah likely to miss the tournament, the selectors will focus on keeping him ready for the West Indies and South Africa Test series later in the year.
