Glenn Maxwell’s IPL journey came full circle at the 2025 mega auction as Punjab Kings (PBKS) reacquired the Australian all-rounder for a modest INR 4.2 crore. Once among the league’s highest-paid players, Maxwell’s price has dipped significantly from his peak INR 14.25 crore deal with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2021.
Maxwell, who last played for Punjab Kings in 2017, was instrumental in their 2014 campaign, which saw the team reach its first-ever IPL final. However, inconsistent performances led to PBKS releasing him in 2018. In the 2024 season, Maxwell managed just six wickets in ten matches, prompting RCB to release him and refrain from using their Right to Match (RTM) card.

The bidding for Maxwell started with Sunrisers Hyderabad, followed by a contest between PBKS and Chennai Super Kings. Ultimately, PBKS secured the 34-year-old for INR 4.2 crore—a sharp drop from his earlier price tags.
Despite his recent struggles, Maxwell’s overall IPL stats remain impressive, with 2771 runs at a strike rate of 156.73 and 37 wickets at an economy of 8.28. Punjab Kings will hope the experienced all-rounder can rediscover his form and provide balance to their squad.
Maxwell’s return to PBKS has sparked excitement among fans who remember his heroics from 2014. As the team gears up for the 2025 season, all eyes will be on Maxwell to prove his critics wrong and demonstrate that he still has plenty to offer.
