Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star Ambati Rayudu has backed Ruturaj Gaikwad, the team’s new skipper, to shine on the international stage for India. Despite being called up to the Indian Test squad twice in the past 15 months, Gaikwad is yet to make his debut for the national team.
During India’s tour of the West Indies last year, Gaikwad was sidelined in favor of Yashasvi Jaiswal. Later, a finger injury ruled him out of the South Africa series. Gaikwad also missed India’s home Test series against England as he couldn’t recover in time and was recently excluded from the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, set to begin on September 19 in Chennai.
‘Ruturaj has time on his side, and there’s no rush’ – Ambati Rayudu
The talented opener was named a stand-by for the World Test Championship 2023 final but was replaced by Jaiswal as he had to withdraw from the game due to his wedding. However, despite these setbacks, Rayudu remains confident in Gaikwad’s abilities.
Speaking to Hindustan Times during the Legends League Cricket (LLC) event, Rayudu said, “Ruturaj has time on his side, and there’s no rush. I would say he has all the qualities to be a top-class, world-class cricketer. He’s young, and I’m sure he’ll make it really big in the years to come.”
Rayudu, who has retired from international cricket, expressed excitement about playing in the LLC tournament, representing the debutant team Konark Suryas Odisha, captained by Irfan Pathan. “I’m very excited to play competitive cricket again, especially with old teammates and friends. It’s going to be a great tournament,” Rayudu added.
Fans are eagerly awaiting Gaikwad’s next opportunity with the Indian team, as he continues to impress in domestic cricket.
